Everton manager Marco Silva has no intention of greenlighting a loan exit for midfielder James McCarthy, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper’s live blog [10.31am, 12/1] reports that after letting the likes of Mason Holgate and Kieran Dowell depart the Toffees in this transfer window, Silva will not be entertaining the idea of loaning the 28-year-old out.

The likes of West Ham were considering a move for the fit-again midfielder – who is on £50,000-a-week [Spotrac] – according to the Daily Mail, who has recently recovered from a long-term injury.

OPINION

Silva is right to take such a stance on the possibility of loaning James McCarthy out this month. He may not be first choice at the moment – the likes of Idrissa Gueye and Andre Gomes are ahead of him in the pecking order – but he has just returned from injury, so loaning him out would not be wise. He needs to get his confidence back first by being handed a cameo for the Toffees in the Premier League – what would be the point in loaning him out if he has not even kicked a ball for the Everton senior team this season? McCarthy could end up being crucial to their success this season and there is no reason why he cannot establish himself in the first team once again. There is no denying the talent that he has – all Silva needs to do now is bring it out of him after such a long-period out. Silva would have been making the wrong decision to let him leave, as who knows who could get injured this season.
