A section of football fans have taken to Twitter to hail Joe Gomez for the long-throw rocket that catapulted England to victory against Croatia at the weekend.

The Liverpool defender was integral to England’s memorable 2-1 Nations League win at Wembley on Sunday, launching a long throw from the right that was finished off by Jesse Lingard for the equaliser.

Many supporters were impressed with Gomez and how it has added an impressive new dimension to his game.

COMMENTARY:

Long throws have not been so en vogue since Rory Delap was making himself indispensable at Stoke City with his rockets from the sidelines. By setting up England’s equaliser and laying the foundations for a memorable fightback that rightly reserves England a place in the Nations League semi-finals next summer, Gomez ensured himself plenty of love from England supporters on social media. As Liverpool followers were eager to point out, rivals and pundits who had mocked the club for employing a throw-in coach to secure a marginal gain had suddenly gone quiet. Gomez has been the biggest beneficiary of the hired expert. He has already showed his skill in this area, but only really during the odd run-out at right-back. Gomez must be given more chance at his club to create havoc with throws, particularly when his side are chasing a game. They are as effective as corners, if not more so, because they are so accurate and consistently able to beat the first defender.
