Southampton have warned admirers that Virgil van Dijk won’t be sold in the summer.

According to a report in The Mirror Saints chief Ralph Krueger was adamant in an interview with talkSPORT that the defender won’t be sold.

Van Dijk was in high demand during January with Chelsea, Manchester City and Paris St Germain registering their interest despite a firm hands off warning from the club after selling Jose Fonte to West Ham.

Bidding was expected to begin at £50m once the summer transfer window opens but with the defender under contract until 2022 Saints are determined to build a side around the Dutchman.

“At the moment, Virgil is very committed to us,” Krueger said. “He is our team captain and we see him in our red and white stripes.”

Van Dijk missed the EFL Final against Manchester United at Wembley due to an ankle injury and may not be back this season.

Saints signed the 25-year-old from Celtic in August 2015 for a fee in the region of £11m with the Scottish side due a percentage of any profit from any future transfer fee.
