Paul Scholes has taken his first steps into coaching by enrolling for his A coaching licence today.

According to a report in The Sun, the former Manchester United midfielder started his course today and could have his A licence by the end of this season.

After retiring from playing, and a brief comeback, Scholes took an unlikely move into media work having shunned that side of the game throughout his playing career.

Now though it seems that he has been bitten by the coaching bug and is looking for a direct link with the game.

An A licence is required for any senior coaching role these days but as a high profile former player Scholes can by-pass much of the requirements of the licence.

Having declared his interest in coaching Scholes is now following in the footsteps of his Class of 92 team-mates such as Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville and Nicky Butt.

A coaching role at Old Trafford would be the natural next step but former United coach Warren Joyce has left an open invite to join him at Wigan Athletic.
