He’s still yet to make an appearance for Arsenal this season due to injury and now, Werder Bremen’s Clemens Fritz has backed Per Mertesacker to make a return to Germany, report The Sport Review.

Having played alongside Mertesacker in his time at Bremen, Mertesacker has already spoken about a return to Weserstadion according to Fritz.

Speaking to Bild via Sky Sports News, Fritz claimed: “We’ve talked about it [a return to Bremen]. It would be a good thing for the club.”

Having made over 140 Premier League appearances for Arsenal since signing at Emirates Stadium in 2011, Mertesacker is actually the Gunners’ captain right now.

However, with Laurent Koscielny admirably standing in as captain during his absence, not to mention new boy Shkodran Mustafi impressing alongside him, Mertesacker faces a battle for game time when he recovers from injury.

With young Rob Holding having impressed when called upon this term, not to mention Gabriel Paulista representing another younger centre back option under Arsene Wenger, Mertesacker could become surplus to requirements over the year or so.
