Despite making his name as a goalscoring midfielder, goalless Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum has admitted that he is eager to open his Reds account, report The Express.

A £23 million summer arrival from Newcastle United of course, Wijnaldum racked up his second assist of the season when laying on Adam Lallana’s strike against Leicester City but he recognises he needs to contribute goals to the team.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, the Netherlands international said: “During the years I have scored a lot of goals as a midfielder and when you get that feeling, you always want to score.

“You’re going to have a hunger to score goals and you’re going to be greedy to score goals. That’s what I am right now.”

Having struck 11 goals in his single season for Newcastle United last term, Wijnaldum’s energy to complete his box-to-box duties proved the key motivation behind Jurgen Klopp bringing him to Anfield this summer.

Starting all four of the Reds’ Premier League fixtures so far this season, Klopp clearly trusts the Dutchman as his ideal midfield partner for Jordan Henderson right now.

Impressing for the most part this term, it appears all that is missing from Wijnaldum’s smooth transition into Anfield is a goal.

Wijnaldum continued: “The most important thing is how can I help the team? If that’s with assists then so be it. Of course I want to score, because I did it for a lot of years in a lot of teams and it’s something I can do.

“I’m searching for goals because if you get used to scoring goals, you’re going to have a hunger and be greedy to score goals from midfield.”

Perhaps Wijnaldum’s luck will be in when the Reds make the trip south to take on Chelsea in the huge Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge this evening.
