Renato Sanches

According to reports from Manchester Evening News, Manchester City have dropped out of the race to sign Manchester United transfer target Renato Sanches.

The 18-year-old made his senior debut for Benfica just a matter of months ago but has already emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders in world football and earned comparisons with Brazil icon Ronaldinho.

Earlier this week, a host of clubs were linked with the Portugal international, including PSG, Real Madird and Manchester City, whilst Manchester United’s interest has been well-documented since their failed bid during the January transfer window.

But according to Manchester Evening News, the Citizens have decided to drop their interest in the creative box-to-box prodigy, with a number of alternative midfielders on their radar – not least including Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan, Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos and Juventus star Paul Pogba.

That leaves Manchester United in pole position to land the £40million-rated Benfica sensation, but PSG and Real Madrid still represent formidable competition in the transfer battle for Sanches’ signature.
