Indeed, United are yet to offer the 34-year-old a contract extension and a number of Premier League clubs are queuing up to sign him on a free transfer – including Arsenal and West Ham.

But the latest reports from The Express claim Everton have now joined the race for Carrick’s signature – but that could depend on whether Roberto Martinez is still in charge at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are set to face Manchester United in an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley but have desperately underperformed in the Premier League, slumping down to twelfth place following a midweek draw with Crystal Palace.
