Thomas Vermaelen

According to reports from talkSPORT, Chelsea, Liverpool and West Ham are interested in signing former Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen during the summer transfer window.

The Belgium international registered 150 appearances for the north London outfit, captaining them for two seasons, before moving to Barcelona in a £15million deal two summers ago.

But persistent injury problems, combined with the sturdy form of Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano and Jeremy Mathieu, has seen him manage just 17 appearances across all competitions in 18 months at the Nou Camp.

talkSPORT, citing Spanish publication Fichajes, report that the 30-year-old centre-back is ready to quit the Catalan outfit with a preference to returning to the Premier League.

And the radio station’s website further claim that four clubs are interested in granting Vermaelen his move to the English top flight – Chelsea, Liverpool, Southampton and West Ham.

However, fellow Spanish outlet Don Balon are a little more sceptical. They claim Barcelona would want to recoup the majority of their original investment, but potential suitors are unlikely to pay anything near that sum.
