William Carvalho

According to reports from The Express, Arsenal and Liverpool target William Carvalho has signed a new contract at Sporting Lisbon.

The 23-year-old is widely revered as one of the most exciting youngsters in world football and proved his potential last summer by claiming the Player of the Tournament award at the U21 European Championships.

Arsenal have been continuously linked with the Portugal international over the last few years and recent reports have suggested he could be included in Arsene Wenger’s major engine room investment next summer, when Bosman-bound midfield veterans Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky are expected to leave the club.

Likewise, Liverpool scouts watched Carvalho in action during the U21 Euros and their long-term interest has been documented once again by The Express, who claim Reds scouts have been monitoring him recently.

But according to the British newspaper, the physically imposing midfielder, who measures in at 6 foot 2 and reportedly weighs over 14 stone, has just signed a new contract at Sporting Lisbon until summer 2020.

That doesn’t necessarily mean Carvalho won’t be available in the summer, but the Primeira Liga outfit have protected his value by increasing his release clause to £35million – which the Premier League duo would likely have to activate.

The midfield enforcer said upon signing his new deal; “I am really happy with the confidence that Sporting has shown in me once again. Renewing my contract for another four years is a dream come true for me.

“This will motivate me even more to make sure I am at my best. I want to tell the fans that I am really happy with the contract until 2020 that I have signed and you can expect me to do by best. I have been here a long time and I want to stay here.”
