John Terry

According to reports from The Express, Harry Redknapp has suggested Chelsea captain John Terry could make a shock move to a Premier League rival next summer.

The Blues defender unexpectedly revealed last weekend that he expects to leave Stamford Bridge when his contract expires in the summer, with no offer of an extension currently on the table, although the club have since insisted that he could still be offered a new deal.

And Harry Redknapp, best known for his management spells with West Ham, Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur, believes that there would be interest from rival Premier League clubs if the 35-year-old left the Blues at the end of the season.

The former White Hart Lane gaffer drew on the example of Petr Cech, who swapped Chelsea for Arsenal last summer, whilst Frank Lampard’s unexpected year-long loan at Manchester City is another instance to bear in mind.

In his column for the London Evening Standard, the 68-year-old wrote; “I can’t believe they would let him go. He is the type of player you keep around your club. Everyone knows he is a leader and you find it very difficult to replace that presence in the dressing room.

“If I had been at Manchester City or Arsenal, I would have gone in on deadline day to see whether he wanted to move. John could tip the balance in the Premier League title race for one of those sides.

“Similarly, in the summer, City, Arsenal or Manchester United might look at Terry and see the benefit of signing him for a year. Arsenal took Petr Cech, which many people thought inconceivable at this time last year, so why not John as well? He’d walk into Arsenal’s team even now — they need his character.”
