Defensive Midfield - Michael Carrick

According to reports from Mirror Football, Arsenal are preparing a fourth attempt to sign Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.

United won 78% of the 18 Premier League fixtures in which the England international featured last season but he’s failed to have the same effect on the fifth-place side this term and is yet to be offered a contract extension, with his current deal due to expire in the summer.

According to Mirror Football, Arsene Wenger has attempted to sign the 34-year-old on three occasions before – when he signed for local rivals Spurs in 2004, when he moved to Old Trafford two years later and before agreeing a twelve-month extension last summer – and will try again at the end of the season.

The Gunners gaffer is known to be planning a major investment in his midfield options for the summer transfer window, when Bosman-bound veterans Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky are expected to leave the club, and Carrick represents a cheaper alternative to their other priority targets on a free transfer.

However, a move to the Emirates isn’t the only option available to Carrick. He’s still hopeful of agreeing a new contract at Old Trafford and Mirror Football moot PSG as potential suitors. A move to the MLS is another plausible scenario, whilst recent reports have suggested Newcastle United are also interested in signing the Wallsend-born midfielder.
