Louis van Gaal’s love affair with wingers is an interesting one to say the least.
Club-record signing Angel Di Maria lasted just twelve months at Manchester United before being jettisoned to PSG, whilst 20-year-old wide-man Adnan Januzaj – once billed as the brightest prospect in the Premier League – now finds himself struggling for form on loan at Borussia Dortmund. Orange’s prodigal son Memphis Depay, likewise, is stuck on van Gaal’s subs bench and seemingly out of favour, despite the fanfare surrounding his £25million summer arrival.
Regardless, wingers never seem to be too far away from LVG’s thoughts. The Dutchman has continuously insinuated since the close of the summer transfer window that he intends to sign a wide-man in January and expressed that desire more explicitly after United’s 2-0 win over West Brom on Saturday, telling reporters; “You have seen that now we play with Jesse Lingard and he is not the most speedy winger in the world and Mata is also not the most speedy winger in the world. So first we must first finish that problem and then we can see how we have to play and how we are in balance with playing with speedy wingers.”
