According to reports from France Football via The Daily Star, Aston Villa and Newcastle United are both targeting PSG goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.

The 14-cap international made two appearances for Italy at the 2014 World Cup and has claimed two Goalkeeper of the Year awards since moving to Ligue 1 from Palermo in 2011.

Despite the impressive record of 64 clean sheets in 142 league outings, however, the 28-year-old has been demoted to the role of understudy since the Parisians’ summer swoop for the younger Kevin Trapp, previously of Eintracht Frankfurt.

He’s made just one start so far this season and appears to be surplus to requirements at Parc de Princes – a situation which has reportedly caught the attention of Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Brad Guzan’s Villa performances have come under scrutiny in recent months whilst the Magpies find themselves disastrously short on goalkeepers, with Tim Krul and Karl Darlow both sidelined through injury.

The report fails to mention whether Villa or Newcastle plan to move in January, but This Is Futbol assume that will be the case.
