James Wilson

According to reports from The Daily Star this afternoon, Celtic are currently negotiating a loan deal for Manchester United striker James Wilson.

The 19 year-old exploded onto the scene with a debut brace against Hull City during Ryan Giggs’ short spell as interim manager at the end of the 2013/14 campaign. He’s highly-rated within the Old Trafford set up and the England fold, having scored twice in ten appearances for the Junior Lions from the U16 to U21 age-groups.

But the 5 foot 11 forward has struggled for game-time and goals since Louis van Gaal’s appointment last summer. He netted once in 13 Premier League outings last term and has seen just 10 minutes of league action this season despite the Red Devils’ limited depth up top.

The United boss revealed his intentions to farm out Wilson in September after agreeing Adnan Januzaj’s loan move to Borussia Dortmund, stating; “James has to go to a Championship club, so then I can call him back if my striker is injured. Then we need him and then he would have more playing time. But for Wilson, another year in the same way as last year is not good for his development. ”

Wolves boss Kenny Jackett later claimed that the striker wasn’t available for loan, declaring; “The information is he’s not available. Manchester United are keeping him for the time being. There has been a number of clubs who have enquired about him and at one stage they had been saying perhaps he could go.”

But according to The Star, who cite The Scotsman, a loan move could still be on the cards – albeit to the Scottish top flight rather than the Championship. They claim the Hoops are keen on the teenage forward and that ‘a loan deal is reportedly being negotiated’.

The move to Celtic Park would see Wilson link up with fellow Red Devil Tyler Blackett, who also joined Celtic on loan during the summer transfer window.
