Arsene Wenger (9)

According to reports from Mirror Football yesterday evening, Arsene Wenger has hinted he could step down as Arsenal boss in 2017.

Le Professeur was appointed Gunners gaffer in 1996 and has since guided the club to three Premier League titles and six Fa Cups – all but two of which came during his first decade in north London.

He was speaking at Arsenal’s AGM meeting on Thursday, where the Frenchman came under fire for a lack of signings during the summer and poor results in Europe, following recent Champions League defeats to Dynamo Zagreb and Olympiacos.

The 65 year-old’s contract expires at the end of next season and according to Mirror Football, Wenger’s tone when discussing his future suggested he is prepared to call it quits once his current deal winds down. That would make it exactly 21 years since his appointment.

As quoted by the British newspaper, he said; “I am resolute to commit absolutely until the last day of my contract to bring back big success to this club, and leave as well one day in a position where it can do even better when I leave.

“That is for me very important that I leave the club in the shape that the guy who comes after me can do better.

“The responsibility on my shoulders is much bigger. I know what it means for people. I know how sad people are when we don’t do well, I know how sad people are when we lose a game.”

Arsenal travel to Watford this Saturday in the Premier League’s 5.30pm kickoff.
