Barca could stand in way of Chelsea’s January swoop for Everton star

John Stones (2)

According to reports from The Daily Mail yesterday morning, Barcelona have emerged as the latest party interested in signing Everton defender John Stones.

Chelsea saw three bids rejected for the England international during the summer, with their final bid believed to be worth around £38million, and reports last week revealed the Premier League champions will revive their interest in the coming transfer window.

The news follows a horrendous start to the west London outfit’s title defence; they’re currently in 16th place with the second worst goals conceded record in the division.

According to The Daily Mail, however, who cite reports from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Chelsea could now face competition from their La Liga counterparts Barcelona.

Barca are expected to hit the market hard once their transfer embargo is lifted in the new year and Nou Camp boss Luis Enrique is allegedly seeking a long-term addition to the heart of his defence.

Stones features on the Barcelona gaffer’s shortlist, along with Athletic Bilbao prodigy Aymeric Laporte, Atletico Madrid’s Jose Giminez and PSG hotshot Marquinhos – who has also been linked with Chelsea in recent weeks.

The good news for Chelsea and Everton, however, is that the 6 foot 2 centre-half is not thought to be the Catalan outfit’s first choice.
