John Terry

According to reports from Mirror Football yesterday evening, skipper John Terry has already received offers from several foreign clubs should he decide to leave Chelsea.

The former England centre-back has been a near permanence at the heart of the Blues’ defence since his debut 17 years ago, registering 678 appearances and captaining them to four Premier League titles.

But he’s become the biggest victim of the disastrous start to Chelsea’s Premier League title defence as the west Londoners lay in 14th place after seven games; hauled off at half time during a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City and benched for four of Chelsea’s last five fixtures across all competitions – including the 2-1 defeat to Porto yesterday evening.

The 34 year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and Mirror Football claim Terry has already received several offers for potential next destinations.

Turkish outfit Fenerbahce, who signed Manchester United duo Robin van Perise and Nani during the summer, have reportedly ‘stepped up their interest’ in the 6 foot 2 defender, whilst ‘several’ Chinese clubs have already made offers after Terry proved a huge hit during an ambassadorial tour of Guangzhou last summer.

Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand, however, who partnered Terry at centre-back for England until the Chelsea legend was suspended by the FA for racially abusing his brother Anton back in 2011, believes the Blues need their captain more than ever.

Following the shock defeat to Porto yesterday evening, the BT Sport pundit said; “There was no composure, no real leadership out there. You look back on past Mourinho and Chelsea sides. You had Drogba, Terry and Lampard who other players could look to, and they would turn around and say ‘listen I’ve been here before, don’t worry, follow me, we’ll be alright and get through this and weather the storm. I didn’t see that tonight. I didn’t see players who would stand up and be counted in that way. I think they have a lot of work now to get out this group.”

“John Terry has been an integral part of this Chelsea side for over 12 years,” added Ferdinand. “It’s not just one person who can change this team. There is an intensity that I just don’t see in this Chelsea team. It’s been part of their make-up for many years and to win big games abroad you have to come into them with the right frame of mind. Seeing Hazard and Terry on the bench is destabilising for this squad. They are looking around for inspiration and are not seeing it from anyone at the moment.”
