Chelsea to launch historic £40m bid; but fear Man United hijack

John Stones

According to reports from The Guardian yesterday evening, Chelsea are set to make a fourth and final offer for John Stones after the Everton defender handed in a transfer request.

The 21 year-old has emerged as the most sought-after centre-back in the Premier League this summer with Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City all linked to his signature in recent weeks.

The Premier League champions have already seen three bids rejected by the Toffees, the latest being worth around £30million, with the Goodison outfit remaining adamant that the England international will not be allowed to leave the club this summer.

His contract doesn’t expire until 2019 and after parting with Sylvain Distin at the end of last season, Stones and defensive partner Phil Jagielka are currently the only centre-halves on Everton’s books.

The Blues have been considering a fourth and final £40million bid for some time but reports last week suggested it would hinge on a transfer request from the former Barnsley prodigy first; Chelsea feeling they’ve already demonstrated their commitment to signing him before the end of the transfer window.

And before training yesterday, that’s exactly what happened according to BBC Sport. The Guardian believe that will trigger Chelsea into making their long-awaited final bid within the next few days – £35million up front and an extra £5million in potential add-ons.

It doubles the west Londoners’ original valuation of Stones and if accepted would make him the most expensive defender in Premier League history, the second-most expensive English player of all time after Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and Jose Mourinho’s most expensive signing throughout his two terms at Stamford Bridge.

However, there remain concerns that Manchester United, in need of added quality at centre-back themselves, could look to hijack any accepted bid at the final hour – essentially letting Chelsea do the hard part in convincing Robert Martinez to sell the club’s most promising youngster before making a rival offer of their own.

Stones, however, appears eager to join the set-up at Stamford Bridge.
