According to reports from Manchester Evening News this afternoon, Manchester United are hoping to wrap up a deal for Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin by the end of next week.
The 25 year-old has emerged as one of the most formidable enforcers in the Premier League over the last three campaigns, finishing the 2014/15 season with the second-most tackles per-match (3.7) of any player in the division.
Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal views the France international as a long-term successor to Michael Carrick at the base of midfield, dubbing the No.6 position a ‘key role‘ back in May.
After nearly forcing his way out of St. Mary’s twelve months ago, Schneiderlin is almost certain to leave the south coast this summer with Arsenal, Tottenham and United all linked to his signature.
The Old Trafford outfit are currently proving the most proactive in the race to sign the 6 foot 2 centre-mid, however, and have already seen a £20million bid rejected by the Saints.
According to MEN, United now intend to ramp up their interest and come to an agreement with Ronald Koeman’s side by the end of next week, when they will embark on a pre-season tour of Austria and Holland.
Southampton are also keen to have Schneiderlin’s future resolved beforehand, fearing taking the midfielder on tour could further slow the negotiations process and resultantly disrupt their preparations for the 2015/16 campaign.
The Saints value the former Strasbourg youngster at £25million.
