Gotze

According to reports from The Express this afternoon, Arsenal have entered Chelsea and Manchester United’s race for Bayern Munich midfielder Mario Gotze.

The 23 year-old moved to the Allianz Arena from Borussia Dortmund in summer 2013, since helping the Bavarians lift consecutive Bundesliga titles. He’s perhaps better famed for his winning goal at the 2014 World Cup; an extra time volley that saw Germany beat Argentina in the tournament’s final.

At club level, however, Gotze – once described by Mannschaft great Franz Beckenbaur as Germany’s answer to four-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi – has struggled to make the same sort of impact, often finding himself benched for or excluded from Bayern’s biggest games.

And according to The Express, he’s now emerged as a summer target for Premier League trio Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, who are hoping to capitalise on the rift developing between manager Pep Guardiola and agent Volker Struth.

As reported by Goal.com, Struth recently told German publication Bild; “Guardiola has destroyed Gotze. He feels like the coach doesn’t have faith in him and yet still he is asked to be decisive when he gets on the pitch.

“I’m surprised that Guardiola didn’t use Gotze in important matches like the German Cup and Champions League semi-finals. He only plays in the easy games.

“I wonder why no one at the club has realised that and defended Mario. Bayern need a figure like former president Uli Hoeness again,” he added.
