According to reports from The Express this afternoon, Dutch international Nigel De Jong is on the verge of agreeing a two-year contract extension at AC Milan.
With his current deal on the verge of expiration, the 30 year-old has been mooted as a potential solution to Manchester United’s lack of tenacity in the middle of the park over the last few months.
That’s in no small part due to the Netherlands international’s impressive performances under Louis van Gaal’s direction at last summer’s World Cup, combined with his proven track record in the Premier League – having lifted the English title with local rivals Manchester City in 2012.
As This Is Futbol revealed in April, United are believed to have even offered the shin-shattering midfielder a contract worth £4million per year – having been allowed to discuss potential contract arrangements with foreign clubs since the close of the January transfer window.
But according to The Express, who cite Italian news outlet Tuttomercatoweb, De Jong has now rejected the chance to work under van Gaal once again. He’s set to sign a two-year extension at the San Siro, which could be announced within 48 hours.
