Danny Ings

According to reports from The Daily Mail yesterday evening, Tottenham’s interest in Liverpool target Danny Ings could see his compensation fee rise to in excess of £8million.

The England U21 striker, who claimed eleven goals and four assists during his debut Premier League campaign this season, has emerged as a prime target for some of England’s top clubs, including Liverpool and Manchester United – as This Is Futbol revealed earlier this month.

Spurs launched a £12million bid earlier this week which has been accepted by Burnley – as revealed by The International Business TimesBut the 22 year-old could still reject a move to north London in favour of Anfield when his contract expires at the end of June.

That had previously made Ings available through a £4million compensation agreement, but The Daily Mail claim Tottenham’s successful bid will have a direct impact on the 5 foot 10 forward’s fee – and likely double it.

Should that prove to be the case, the former Bournemouth youngster will break the current record for a compensation fee – the £6.5m agreement that saw Daniel Sturridge move from Manchester City to Chelsea in 2010.

This is quite an interesting situation. I would very much like to see how Ings would cope at the Europa League/almost CL level (he’s nowhere near good enough for the level above). I rate Sturridge as better than Kane, but I suppose he’s almost more likely to start at Liverpool considering Sturridge’s injury history and their lack of alternatives. He might be better off going somewhere like Villa where he is guaranteed to be a guaranteed starter (assuming Benteke leaves); I suppose Sunderland might be another alternative although he doesn’t really seem like Allardyce’s ‘style’ of centre forward (Kevin Davies is definitely the archetype of that).

£12m for someone out of contract would be marvellous business for Burnley. If they can keep hold of a few of their players (I can see Trippier and possibly Boyd getting poached) and use the money to improve their strength in depth I could see them coming straight back up.
