Liverpool or Man United could land Prem’s top target man for just £32.5m

Christian Benteke

According to reports from The Express this morning, the contract of Aston Villa star Christian Benteke includes a £32.5million release clause.

The Belgium international is ending the campaign amid a blaze of form, bagging twelve goals in his last twelve appearances across all competitions, and could cap it off with a winning performance against Arsenal in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

That prolific run is believed to have caught the attention of Liverpool and Manchester United; the former set for a strike-force reshuffle this summer following underwhelming campaigns from Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Daniel Sturridge, and the latter sourcing a replacement for Serie A-bound Robin van Persie.

Earlier this week, This Is Futbol revealed the 24 year-old’s contract includes a mysterious release clause that could pave the way for a move to either of the great north west clubs this summer.

And today, The Express have revealed that clause is worth £32.5million. It follows comments from Tim Sherwood admitting the Villa Park outfit wouldn’t be able to stop the 6 foot 3 striker leaving this summer.

“There’s a buyout clause in his contract so it will be impossible for us to stop him if he wants to go,” Sherwood said.

“Someone’s got to meet that buyout clause and if they don’t it won’t be considered because we don’t want to lose him.”
