In an interview with Spanish publication Marca, Sami Khedira has confirmed he’ll be leaving Real Madrid this summer.

The 28 year-old is widely regarded as one of the top defensive midfielders in world football, affirming such status last summer as he won the 2014 Champions League title and the World Cup in just a matter of months.

But the German international has managed only 24 La Liga appearances for Los Blancos over the last two campaigns, partly due to recurring injuries, and started just three fixtures in all competitions since like-minded midfielder Lucas Silva arrived at the Bernabeu during the January transfer window.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign, Khedira has now confirmed he’ll be leaving the Spanish capital this summer.

“I’ve always felt that I’ve had the coach’s backing, but the message indirectly came through to me that I was no longer needed, I was frozen out and wouldn’t have a chance to continue playing,” Khedira revealed in an interview with Marca.

“I’ve felt happy at Real Madrid. I leave with the respect of everybody who’s worked alongside me and with a clear conscience.

“I want to thank everyone, my teammates and the fans. The club will remain in my heart forever. I’m very proud to have worn this badge for five years,” he added.

Chelsea and Manchester United are both believed to have tabled pre-contract offers for Khedira – as This Is Futbol revealed last month – but Bundesliga outfit Schalke appear to be leading the race for his signature.

Miners General Manager Horst Heldt confirmed last week that they’re already in talks to sign the former Stuttgart star, telling reporters; “I would prefer us to conduct our business in private. But it is true that we want Khedira for the coming season. However, we are not the only club who wants him,” as revealed by This Is Futbol.
