Ibrahim Afellay

According to reports from The Metro this afternoon, Tottenham are hoping to sign Barcelona winger Ibrahim Afellay on a free transfer this summer when his Nou Camp contract expires.

Barcelona signed the Netherlands international for €3million in January 2011, after claiming 23 goals in 76 Eredivise appearances in the space of three years at former club PSV, in addition to the 2007 Dutch Footballer of the Year award.

But he’s since gone on to make just 35 appearances across all competitions for the Catalans side, predominantly finding himself either sidelined through injury or loaned out to another club to regain his fitness. This season, he’s on loan at Olympiacos, for whom he’s netted six times in 29 outings.

With his contract set to expire this summer, Afellay’s Nou Camp hell will almost certainly be coming to an unceremonious end.

Not put off by the 29 year-old’s lack of football over the last four years however, Premier League side Tottenham are reportedly keen on a bosman deal. Having once been regarded as one of European football’s hottest prospects however, they’re unlikely to be his only suitors.
