Robert Green

With Petr Cech confirming he won’t be staying on as back-up to Thibaut Courtois next season – I’m pretty sure 99.9% of Blues fans will be in agreement that he’s too good for the bench – Chelsea face a bit of a dilemma this summer.

Having also allowed Mark Schwarzer to join relegation-bound Leicester City in January, the west Londoners could go from boasting the most formidable goalkeeping department in world football to having just one recognised senior goalkeeper on their books in the space of a single transfer window.

Step in Robert Green, according to reports from The Times. That’s right, Chelsea are reportedly planning a summer swoop for the England international, ever-famed for his blundered save against Clint Dempsey of the USA in the Group Stages of the 2010 World Cup. Here’s a quick video, in case you missed it:

To give credit where it’s due, this has easily been the best season of Green’s career. He’s made the most saves per-match of any Premier League goalkeeper this term – an impressive 96 in just 29 appearances. Many will also point to the former Norwich City and West Ham goalkeeper’s locality – Loftus Road is just four miles from Stamford Bridge.

But at the veteran age of 35, and having never made a Europa League or Champions League appearance throughout his entire club career, there’s almost certainly more coveted targets on the Chelsea radar.

Something tells me this wayward report was meant to go out on April 1st.
