Raphael VaraneIt’s clear to just about everybody that Manchester United need to sign a new centre-back. Unfortunately they’re going to have to wait until the summer transfer window to do the necessary business.

Manchester United’s biggest mistake during the last 12 months was their failure to sign adequate replacements for Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. The two experienced defenders have been mainstays in this first team for so long, that their absence was always going to play some kind of havoc.

Luckily, there are plenty of good options out there. One in particular seems to stand out. According to The Metro, Manchester United are now closing in on a deal for Real Madrid’s highly regarded young centre-back, Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman is only 21-years-old, but he’s already regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe. He’s a tall, athletic presence who’s good both on and off the ball. He doesn’t panic in dangerous situations and he’s usually positioned well enough to deal with them.

I can see him fitting in well in the Premier League as he’s pacey and aggressive. He won’t give attackers a moment’s rest when they’re on the ball. Isn’t that exactly what Manchester United need: somebody who can lead their defense now and for years to come?

According to the aforementioned source, Varane could be available for £22m. On the face of things, this is a huge amount of cash. Relatively speaking, however, it’s a fair sum for a player who’s clearly set for big things. If Real Madrid truly are interested, Manchester United would be crazy not to swoop in.

He’d be cheaper than Mats Hummels and more effective than some of the others that Manchester United has been linked to (the Ron Vlaar’s and Winston Reid’s of this world). This one strikes me as a bit of a no brainer.

What’s your take? Is Raphael Varane the perfect fit for Manchester United? Who else should they be looking at?
