Should Manchester United continue to target this £30m talent?

Kevin de BruyneWolfsburg star Kevin De Bruyne has had a funny old career. He’s only 23-years-old, but he’s already been tossed around like an old rag doll. After four seasons with Genk, the Belgian talent ended up moving to Chelsea for £7m.

It looked like he was set for big things. Unfortunately, he failed to settle and at times it looked like The Blues didn’t really know what to do with him. He only managed to make 9 appearances for his new club, whilst getting loaned out to Genk (his old stomping grounds) and Werder Bremen.

Before long Jose Mourinho and co. essentially admitted that there was no place for this prodigious talent within their team. They sold him to Wolfsburg as part of an £18m deal. Isn’t that curious? De Bruyne barely featured for Chelsea, but his price-tag still rose by approximately £11m over a two year period.

If that’s not a marker of the boy’s quality, I don’t know what is.

Actually, scratch that. How about De Bruyne’s stats for this year? The Belgian ace has played 29 games for Wolfsburg, scoring 11 goals and making 15 assists. He’s clearly a massive threat in the final third. Before too long, he could well earn himself a move to another big club. Who knows, maybe the move will stick this time?

Indeed, as The Express note, Manchester United have been strongly linked with a move for the 23-year-old. They’re one of many clubs in the Premier League who are in desperate need of fresh attacking talent. The source suggests that a £30m deal could be on the cards. Unfortunately, they also carry quotes from the player himself, who is in no hurry to leave Wolfsburg:

“I never said I wanted to leave in the summer. In football terms, it would not be wise. I’m not one of those players who kisses the shirt and then leaves.”

This throws a spanner in the works, but it doesn’t make a deal impossible. The Red Devils have more than enough financial firepower to tempt Wolfsburg into selling. If they can also put a compelling salary offer in place for the player, then who knows?

I wouldn’t want to bet against this deal happening.

What’s your take? Could Kevin De Bruyne finally find a long-term home at Manchester United?
