According to reports from The Metro yesterday afternoon, Brendan Rodgers is set to reignite Liverpool’s interest in Derby County midfielder Will Hughes this summer.
The England U21, who won the Football League’s Young Player of the Year award for 2014, is seen as a potential successor to Anfield icon Steven Gerrard, who will be departing for the MLS at the end of the campaign.
Although the 19 year-old lacks the former England skipper’s dynamic physicality, he’s an incredible technician, this term boasting the twelfth-best pass completion rate in the Championship at 86.3%.
The Reds have been linked with the Three Lions prospect before – particularly back in January 2013, when the Derby Telegraph claimed over ten Premier League clubs were monitoring the Rams playmaker, including Manchester United and Chelsea.
And it will no surprise to Derby fans that Liverpool’s revived interest has coincided with their recent slump of form, going winless and losing four from their last six.
They’ve now dropped to the play-off spots and if Steve McLaren’s side fail to win promotion, the Metro claim Liverpool will pounce with a £15million offer. If Derby do make it to the Premier League for next season however, it’s unlikely they’ll sell.
