Is it too late for Arsenal to hijack this £30m deal?

Paulo DybalaThroughout the January transfer window, Premier League clubs continued to pick up links to Palermo’s star forward, Paulo Dybala. At one stage or another Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal have all been in line to pull off a big money deal for the young talent.

It’s easy to see why so many are interested in the 21-year-old. The Argentine ace has been the subject of comparisons to Sergio Aguero for reasons that stretch beyond their shared nationality. Dybala is lightning quick (he might even be able to give Theo Walcott a run for his money), he’s technically gifted and he’s a natural goal-scorer.

In 24 games for Palermo, he’s found the back of the net 12 times. That’s impressive given his age and his club’s current stature in the game. If he continues to develop at this rate, he’s going to become a fairly major talent.

As such, it would be a shame for the aforementioned Premier League clubs to miss out on him. Unfortunately, it looks like this could prove to be the case. According to The Express, Borussia Dortmund are closing in on a £30m deal for the Argentine forward. The source claims that the Bundesliga side are willing to meet Palermo’s valuation of the player.

This strikes me as a big missed opportunity for a club like Arsenal. How often do fans complain about Olivier Giroud lacking pace, or Theo Walcott lacking technique and nous? Why not look to sign a player who’s a good all round striker and who’s only going to get better?

If he really is available for £30m, then perhaps its not too late for Arsene Wenger to make his interest known. Given Giroud’s recent performance against Monaco, I wouldn’t be surprised if The Professor really was weighing up his options.

Let’s just hope that he’s ready and willing to act before it’s too late.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal be in the market for another striker? Is Paulo Dybala the perfect choice?
