Have Arsenal become a ‘graveyard’ club?

Arsene WengerFollowing Arsenal’s recent midweek debacle against Monaco, at lot of criticism has been directed at Arsene Wenger. Some of it is deserved, some of it is out of line.

Of course, The Professor is used to it and I’m sure he won’t bat a single eyelash at most of the comments being sent his way. Still, I feel the need to defend him and his record on a couple of counts.

In particular, Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has been particularly critical. Whilst I respect his opinion on a lot of counts, it strikes me that his comments are entirely misguided. They seem to be entirely reactionary. One thing’s for sure: they fail to account for all the things that Arsene Wenger has achieved (even in recent years).

Following the Monaco game, Balague argued that Arsenal’s players: ‘lack modern guidance both emotionally and tactically’. This is not true during training sessions, but it does seem to be true during games. Arsenal’s players clearly needed to be told not to push on for a second goal against Monaco, but Arsene Wenger (and his coaching staff) remained glued to their seats.

‘What is worse is that it is becoming a graveyard for players and this summer, as usual, their best players will be seeking to leave. They are already 17 years in a row in Europe, and it seems they have not learned anything.’ (Source: The Metro)

The comments about Arsenal’s players seeking to leave this summer are questionable. The Gunners are finally in a sound position financially (something Arsene Wenger has played a significant role in) and they no longer have any pressing need to sell players. What’s more, Arsenal have most of their key players tied down to long-term deals. Arsene Wenger played his role in that too, but it’s easy to forget that in the heat of the moment.

Let’s not forget that Arsenal won the FA Cup last season. They’re in with a good chance of winning it this year too. I’m not sure I’d describe them as a ‘graveyard club’. They are capable of winning something (even if they clearly do have big game nerves).

Finally, Balague says: ‘They are already 17 years in a row in Europe, and it seems they have not learned anything.’

Arsenal are slow to learn, but the fact that they’ve been in Europe for so long is revealing. Arsene Wenger is almost incomparable as a manager. If you’re going to criticise him, at least be on point and avoid reactionary comments.

What’s your take? Were Guillem Balague’s comments regarding Arsene Wenger fair or much too harsh?
