With Manchester United clearly on the hunt for a brand new centre-back, they’ve been linked to a host of different options. One player in particular, however, seems to stand out.
The Red Devils are currently believed to be in the market for Paris Saint Germain starlet, Marquinhos. The Brazilian centre-back is widely regarded as being one of the best young defenders in the world. He’s just 20-years-old, so there’s little doubt that he’s set for big things. I’m not surprised that Louis Van Gaal is in the hunt for this particular talent.
After all, he needs to start courting long term replacements for both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Perhaps Marquinhos is the right man for the job?
One thing’s for sure: the player himself seems to be quite excited by the links. Check out these recent quotes from the youngster: ‘Before, PSG refused to begin negotiations. They have shut the door. I see this as something to take confidence from. It proves PSG count on me but, to be honest, it gives me pleasure to see Manchester United are interested in me. It’s validating.’
From the sounds of things, Marquinhos wouldn’t be averse to a move to Old Trafford. The Metro claim that if Manchester United offer £30m, they’ll be able to close the deal. Things seem to be moving forward pretty quickly, don’t they?
Unfortunately for The Red Devils, PSG are playing hardball with this one. The head coach, Laurent Blanc, has spoken about his desire to keep hold of his younger players: “Marquinhos has a spirit and a special mentality. We have done everything to keep him and we will do everything possible to extend his contract. It is good that, as a player, he can operate in different roles, and let’s not forget he is just 20 years old. He and Adrien Rabiot represent the future of PSG.” (Source: The Metro)
That’s not to say that it’s going to be impossible for Manchester United to sign Marquinhos, just that it’s not going to be an easy task. Still, this should be Louis Van Gaal’s main priority this summer.
