Are Manchester United right to target this £36.6m defensive ace?

|

DaniloAs usual, FC Porto continues to be a source of great talent for other European clubs. They’ve previously turned out players like James Rodriguez, Hulk and Radamel Falcao (who admittedly hasn’t been a hit in the Premier League, but still has a good goal scoring record) and they’ve managed to keep hold of Jackson Martinez (a deadly striker), Yacine Brahimi (a smart winger) and Danilo (an in demand full back).

In this article, we’re going to focus our attention on Danilo, as he’s been attracting some attention from some fairly major clubs. Real Madrid are rumoured to be interested and according to The Metro, Manchester United are also in the running.

Why wouldn’t they be? Manchester United have been lacking in proper defensive quality all season long. Many of their issues this season can be traced back to their inability to provide defensive stability. It’s hard to create free-flowing attacking moves when you have no stability at the back.

I guess that’s what happens when you send your two most experienced centre-backs packing.

Adding some talent to this area of the pitch looks like a smart move.

Danilo is a Brazilian right-back who has been attracting attention from other clubs, despite his youth. He’s only 23-years-old, but he’s already made 11 appearances for his international team (who admittedly don’t have a particularly good defensive record) and he’s been a mainstay for FC Porto since 2012.

He’s made 123 appearances for his current club and he’s scored 9 goals. That makes him pretty dangerous for a right-back. He’s pretty good defensively too, as he’s quick and sharp enough to get back and snub out any attacks before they become too dangerous.

Manchester United could be in a position of power when it comes to negotiations. According to The Metro, Danilo’s FC Porto contract is set to expire next summer and he has no plans to agree new terms. The source suggests that Porto are hoping to insert a £36.6m buyout clause into his next contract to ward off any suitors.

No wonder Danilo isn’t keen to sign up. Here’s hoping that Manchester United are able to profit from their mistakes by sealing a cut-price deal.

What’s your take? Is Danilo the right kind of target for Manchester United?
