Van Gaal LoiosYou can accuse Manchester United of a lot of things (for instance, this season you could label them boring as all heck), but they’ve never lacked in ambition in the transfer market. Ever since Sir Alex Ferguson took charge, they’ve been ready and willing to throw their money at their problems.

If they’re not producing the goods in one area of the pitch, there’s always a clear answer: wait until the summer and bring a world-class footballer in. That’s the way that things have always been. I don’t expect things to be any different this time around.

This leads me neatly onto The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United have some major business planned for this summer. After what we’ve seen this year from this team, I’d say drastic steps are necessary. Still, I wasn’t expecting this: according to the source, The Red Devils are hoping to sign both Gareth Bale and Mats Hummels.

But that’s not the best part. Together, these two signings would cost Manchester United £110m. That’s a startlingly huge amount of cash. Spending this kind of money would likely re-assert The Red Devils as one of Europe’s biggest and most powerful clubs.

What’s more, they’d be getting two majorly talented footballers. If you’re a football fan, you’ll already know too well who Gareth Bale is. He’s one of the deadliest forwards in world football. In 78 performances for Real Madrid, he’s found the back of the net 36 times. He’s lightning quick, he’s technically astute and he’s a seriously dynamic presence.

In some respects, Mats Hummels would be an equally important signing. The Borussia Dortmund centre-back is well regarded in his home country and looks to be ready for a move to a bigger club. He’s tall, physically imposing and he’s confident in the tackle.  He could prove to be a worthy long-term successor for Rio Ferdinand.

If Manchester United really are in a position to spend £110m next summer, they could scarcely invest their money better.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Gareth Bale and Mats Hummels in Manchester United shirts?
