Should Arsenal make this £1.6m transfer gamble?

Krystian BielikSince selling Alex Song, Arsenal have seriously lacked ‘presence’ in the centre-of-the-park. By that, I mean that they lack somebody who’s capable of making life difficult for opposition midfielders. Somebody who will hassle and harry, break-up play, win the ball back and help his team to maintain possession.

Sure, Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta keep themselves busy, but they’re not hugely effective in the role they’ve been asked to take up for the team. They’re both too short and they’re not exactly physically intimidating are they? The Gunners could do a lot better.

Arsene Wenger must be frustrated to see Alex Song do so well at West Ham. The Cameroonian’s decision to move to Barcelona was madness, but I have little doubt that he could still be doing a good job for The Gunners had things worked out differently.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsene Wenger and co. have lodged a big for the ‘Polish Patrick Viera’. That sounds like a step in the right direction to me. Viera is one of the best players to have ever thrown on an Arsenal shirt and he was also a physically imposing, technically gifted midfielder who was strong in the air and difficult to steal the ball away from. He’s the kind of player that Arsenal need.

Unfortunately, the player they’ve been linked to recently is just 16-years-old. His name is Krystian Bielik and he plays for Legia Warsaw.

This news is unlikely to get Arsenal fans excited. After all, Bielik is too young to be an immediate solution to the club’s problems. But the fact that he’s caught the eye playing as a defensive midfielder, at such a young age, is very impressive indeed. There must be something special about Bielik if he’s grabbed Arsene Wenger’s attention.

The aforementioned source suggests that Arsenal have offered Legia Warsaw £1.6m for Bielik. If that’s enough to agree a deal, then it ‘s not like this would represent an expensive gamble. Let’s just hope that Arsene Wenger’s also on the hunt for a more experienced individual as well.

What’s your take? Should Arsenal really dedicate their time to signing a player like Krystian Bielik?
