Should Arsenal battle Dortmund for this £31m talent?

Paulo DybalaDespite Arsenal’s new attacking additions Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez fitting in well at The Emirates (especially the Chilean, who has quickly established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League), it really wouldn’t surprise me to see Arsene Wenger on the hunt for more attacking talent in the January transfer window.

That’s always been The Professor’s way. Even if he desperately needs to fix his leaky defense (which he does), he seems to be something of a contrarian. Signing a decent attacker given Arsenal’s current situation would be just typical.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that The Gunners have their eyes on Palermo’s Argentine starlet, Paulo Dybala. If this is true, it would provide yet further evidence of Arsenal’s increasing ambition in the transfer market. Dybala is only 21-years-old, but he’s already managed to accrue a £31m price-tag.

He’s expensive for a reason. Despite his youth, he’s already proven to be a fantastic talent. In fact, some publications are comparing him to Sergio Aguero. That may be a pretty lazy comparison, driven mostly by the two player’s nationality, but there could be some truth to it. Dybala is pacey, he’s technically gifted and he’s a natural goal-scorer.

In 15 Serie A matches this season, he’s managed to find the back of the net 7 times. That’s a fairly healthy return for a young player. If he manages to keep this up, his price-tag is going to grow even higher. Arsene Wenger might well be smart to sign him now, whilst he’s still affordable (relatively speaking).

Unfortunately for Arsenal, there’s a good chance that they’ll face some competition in their attempts to sign Pauko Dybala. The aforementioned source suggests that Borussia Dortmund are interested in the Argentine. With Marco Reus picking up links to all and sundry, the Bundesliga side may view Dybala as the perfect replacement.

As such, The Gunners need to decide exactly how interested they are. Are they ready to go head-to-head with Dortmund? Are they ready to splash the cash? If the answer to those questions is ‘yes’, then it would be very exciting news indeed.

What’s your take? Should Arsene Wenger battle it out with Jurgen Klopp to sign Paulo Dybala?
