Is this Swiss star the perfect option for Arsenal?

scharEverybody seems to agree that The Gunners need to sign a new centre-back during the January transfer window. the options they’ve got at the moment are either too injured, or quite simply not up to snuff. There’s also an argument to suggest that Arsene Wenger’s defensive options are severely limited, even when everybody’s fully fit.

The only question is who they’re going to bring in. Will Arsene Wenger look to bring in a supporting player for the likes of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny (whose ankle issues could rule him out of a lot of action this season) or will he seek to shake things up by bringing in some major competition?

I can’t help but hope that he picks the latter option. If Arsenal want to improve defensively, they’ll need to make a big change.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that FC Basel’s well-regarded centre-back, Fabian Schar, would be the perfect option for The Gunners. They compare him to Laurent Koscielny and suggest that he’d make an excellent partner to Per Mertesacker.

He’s quick along the turf, he’s aggressive and he makes a lot of interceptions. In general, he’s a smart cookie so he usually finds himself in the right place to mop up any balls over the top or in behind. He’s not the best in the air, but hopefully players like Per Mertesacker would be able to help with that.

Schar’s FC Basel contract will expire in the summer, when he’ll be available as a free transfer. Alternatively, Arsenal could try to sign him this January, when they may be able to secure a cut-price deal.

There aren’t a great deal of talented centre-backs out there, so when one becomes available, it’s smart business to try and snap him up. He’s only 22-years-old, he’s got bags of talent and he looks like a good fit for this Arsenal team. What’s not to love?

What’s  your take? Could Fabian Schar prove to be a good addition to this Arsenal side?
