Could Spurs really snap up this £8m Serie A star?

Raul AlbiolSpurs’ decision to let Michael Dawson leave the club last summer is beginning to look like a mistake. Whilst the English centre-back hasn’t been at his peak for a while, he was an experienced individual who worked hard, made plenty of saving tackles and had the backing of the fans (to an extent).

New additions were drafted in, but they haven’t exactly hit the ground running. Then there’s Jan Vertonghen, whose future at White Hart Lane is less than certain. If the Belgian bruiser isn’t a long-term solution for Tottenham, then Mauricio Pochettino and co. are going to have to reach out into the transfer window to find another option.

In general, Tottenham’s entire back-four seems to need some work. If they can solidify this area, add more creative full-backs to their squad and improve their distribution, there’s also a good chance that they’ll be more effective moving forward.

This leads me neatly onto The Express‘s claim that Tottenham are keeping an eye on Napoli’s star full-back, Raul Albiol. The Spaniard completed an £8m move from Real Madrid to the Serie A side back in 2013.

At 29-years-old, Albiol represents an experienced, talented option. Pundits often claim that this Spurs side lack ‘leaders’ and it strikes me that this Spaniard would help to partially rectify this situation. He’s more or less a veteran of the game, what with his 131 appearances for Valencia, 81 appearances for Real Madrid, 43 appearances for Napoli and his 50 caps for the Spanish international team.

He’s been there, done that and got the t-shirt, multiple times. Despite this, there is a major gap in his footballing history: he’s never played in the Premier League before now. Perhaps Spurs will be the club that gives him the opportunity to do exactly that.

It’s not clear how much Albiol might cost, but he certainly looks like a good option. If Daniel Levy and co. can get the funds together then this could prove to be a good deal for Spurs.

What’s your take? Could Tottneham really sign Raul Albiol from Napoli? Are there other options that they should be considering?
