Could Liverpool REALLY re-sign Fernando Torres?

TorresLiverpool fans must still have fond memories of Fernando Torres. These feelings must be intensified by The Reds’ current lack of decent attacking options.

Since Luis Suarez left the club, Liverpool have been struggling in this department. Most fans would have hoped that Daniel Sturridge would have been able to make the step up, but he’s been suffering through a variety of different injury problems. Mario Balotelli was brought in, but he too has struggled to make any kind of meaningful impact this season. In fact, he’s been hugely frustrating to watch.

Whilst at Liverpool, Fernando Torres found the back of the net 81 times in 142 games. He enjoyed the form of his life at Anfield (indeed, he’s never been better, before or since).

After failing to impress at Chelsea (after a £50m move, no less), where he only scored 45 goals in 172 games, he’s been sent out to AC Milan as part of a two year loan deal. This looked like a bizarre deal when it was announced in the summer and that’s proven to be the case as the month’s have progressed.

Torres has now played 10 games for the Rossoneri and guess how many goals he’s scored? Unfortunately, for the Spaniard, he’s been unable to re-find his goal-scoring boots in a different league, as he’s grabbed just one goal. This has led to claims that the loan deal may be cut short and that Torres could be sent back to Stamford Bridge sooner rather than later.

Nobody seems to want the 30-year-old, do they? If he does end up back with The Blues, Jose Mourinho won’t play him. There’s a good chance that he’ll be sent packing once again.

This lead’s me to The Metro‘s claim that Liverpool are favourites to sign the Spaniard if he becomes available in the near future. Now despite this player’s failings, I can’t help but feel that this would be a good move for The Reds, providing Torres’ is made available for the right price (and is not given a prominent role at Anfield).

It’s the Liverpool equivalent of Chelsea bringing Didier Drogba back. He’s not going to set the Premier League alight, but he’ll rally the fans and he’s got a few goals in him.

With that in mind, perhaps we shouldn’t laugh this one off, as so many other fans seem to be keen to do.

What’s your take? Could Fernando Torres really return to Anfield?
