Could Liverpool really be about to wrap up a surprise deal for Jan Vertonghen?

Jan VertonghenLiverpool’s defensive issues have been well documented over the last 12-18 months. I think it’s far to say that The Reds would have won the Premier League  title last season, had they been able to plug their leaky back-line. Unfortunately, Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard’s efforts were all for naught (yes they earned Champions League action, but it’s not like The Reds set that particular competition alight, is it?).

Having conceded 50 Premier League goals last year, Brendan Rodgers strengthened his back-four by bringing in Dejan Lovren and Alberto Moreno. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been enough. The Reds’ back-line is still shaky and Simon Mignolet’s form has been affected as a result. It’s hard to see how Liverpool can pull out of this slump.

One solution may be for Brendan Rodgers to target a proven Premier League talent. Such a player would be more likely to make an immediate (and positive) impact at Anfield.

This leads me neatly onto The Metro‘s claim that The Reds are ‘closing in’ on Tottenham’s star defender, Jan Vertonghen. The Belgian bruiser has refused all offers of a new deal at White Hart Lane and it now looks like he’ll move on, sooner rather than latter.

Vertonghen has proven to be a fantastic signing for Spurs, even if he hasn’t led the club to any meaningful success. He’s strong in the air and along the ground, he’s quick, he’s tough in the tackle and he’s effective. He’s one of the most imposing defenders in the Premier League and I’m sure that strikers don’t like playing against him.

It’s easy to see why Brendan Rodgers might be interested. Playing Jan Vertonghen alongside Martin Skrtel (whilst Dejan Lovren finds his feet at the club) could help The Reds to find some form (defensively speaking). Once they’ve got this area sorted, they can start to assess their attacking options.

Who knows, perhaps Brendan Rodgers can turn things around after all?

What’s your take? Could The Reds really wrap up a surprise deal for Jan Vertonghen?

Absolute pack of lies… more likely to see Santa Claus on the 25th, which will be a day with a generous blanket of snow!

Sounds like total bollocks, he’s got ages left on his Tottenham contract.

What a lot of total crap……Vertonghen would not be missed and is not good enough to ban improvement on Liverpool’s laughable defence.

What a joke. Why do u websites rehash rubbish spouted from the daily rags that need to sell their papers! Levy would never sell him to the scousers and he will only go abroad! Liverpool aren’t any better than Tottenham right now maybe arguably worse
