Di mariaSince arriving at Old Trafford, Angel Di Maria has been plagued by accusations that he’s not happy at his new club. There was something about the way this deal came about that has kept pundits, papers and armchair warriors debating about the Argentine’s mindset.

Was Di Maria forced out of Real Madrid? Did he really want to end up at Manchester United? Would he have preferred to end up at Paris Saint Germain? It’s not entirely clear we’ll ever get proper answers to these questions. After all, it’s not like the player in question would ever risk the wrath of his paymasters, or the fans he plays in front, by explicitly suggesting he doesn’t want to be there.

There’s a good chance that this is all just nonsense that’s been concocted by the newspapers. Alternatively, he may still be settling down in a new country, adjusting to a new culture, new challenges and a new playing style in English football. Perhaps he’s finding this a little bit difficult, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t come to enjoy it over time.

All of which is to say: it’s hard to know what to make of these rumours. When The Metro runs an article claiming that the player is ‘lining up a move to PSG in the coming months‘, I’m just not sure whether I should be laughing it off, or growing increasingly concerned.

Angel Di Maria did mention a few weeks ago that playing for Paris Saint Germain would be a ‘great experience‘, which is a weird thing for a player who’s just moved to another club to say. Then there’s his quotes regarding Champions League football: ‘I miss Champions League football. We will have to do our best this season so that we qualify for next year’s tournament.‘ (Source: Manchester Evening News)

This begs the question: what happens if Manchester United don’t have access to Champions League football next year? It could create all kinds of issues.

All The Red Devils can do at this stage is make sure that Angel Di Maria is happy and feels at home at Old Trafford. It will take some time, but the club needs to arrive at a stage where these stories stop popping up. The Argentine is a key player in United’s future. Let’s just hope that things stay this way.

What’s your take? What do you make of the rumours linking Angel Di Maria to Paris Saint Germain?
