Manchester United have slowly been finding some form in recent weeks, but they’ve still got some way to go before they’re back on top. The main thing is that The Red Devils are raking in the points and climbing back up the Premier League table.
Next up, however, Louis Van Gaal needs to start getting consistent performances out of his side. United shouldn’t be labouring so hard to beat Premier League minnows. They shouldn’t be getting out-classed by the Premier League elite. They should be challenging for the title. They should be doing better.
That their heading in the right direction is undeniably a good thing. But can’t Van Gaal get his side to their destination a little quicker?
They’ve got plenty of decent attacking options, but The Red Devils do lack a solid core. Their defense is a little shaky and their midfield is lacking in competitive edge.
This must surely explain why Manchester United keep getting linked to Roma’s star midfielder, Kevin Strootman. The Dutch ace is one of the toughest, most physically dominant holding players in world football. He’s even been compared to former United legend, Roy Keane. In that sense, it strikes me that he’d be an excellent addition at Old Trafford.
Unfortunately, he’s not going to come cheap. According to The Metro, Strootman might cost as must as £30m. That’s a huge amount of money, especially given the fact that Van Gaal blew through a huge transfer budget in the summer.
Then there’s the fact that Chelsea are also thought to be interested. If Jose Mourinho wants the player, he won’t have any difficult getting the funds together to bring him to Stamford Bridge. He’ll be able to see off The Red Devils with consummate ease.
But I hope that Van Gaal doesn’t give up – not yet any way. Kevin Strootman is exactly what Manchester United need at this moment in time. If they have to go through a transfer battle to make it happen, then so be it.
