It’s hard to know if Arsenal are back in form, or if they’ve just managed to get a couple of good wins on the trot. After all, they recently followed up three wins against Borussia Dortmund, West Brom and Southampton with a 3-2 defeat by Stoke City. Who’s to say that their wins over Galatasaray and Newcastle United won’t lead to more of the same?
If they’re to protect themselves against big losses in the future, they’ll need to add a few more defensive options to their squad. This leads me neatly onto The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Spartak Moscow’s talented defensive midfielder, Romulo.
Romulo is nothing if he’s not a smart cookie. He’s a natural defender who always tracks back, judges his tackles well and doesn’t eschew the physical side of the game. He’s quite good in the air for a player of his height and he covers a lot of ground in each and every game. It’s easy to see why Arsene Wenger might be interested.
With the likes of Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta providing diminishing returns, it’s high time that The Professor reached out into the transfer window to find potential replacements. I won’t argue that Romulo is the best possible option out there, but he’s certainly not a bad one.
If he hadn’t missed a season and a half of his career thanks to injury, then it’s likely he’d already have earned a move to a big club. After all, he was a key part of the Brazilian side that won the silver medal in the 2012 Olympic tournament. He even has 8 caps for his international side, despite his youth and injury problems.
Now that he’s fit again, he looks ready to start building a meaningful career. With Arsenal on the hunt for a good holding midfielder, this could prove to be a good match.
What’s your take? Is Romulo the right man for The Gunners? Which other options should Arsene Wenger be tracking?
