Lassana DiarraTottenham’s start to the season has been unimpressive to say the least. Nine games in and they’ve collected only eleven points. As things currently stand, they’re eleventh in the Premier League table and they’ve just suffered an embarrassing home defeat to Newcastle United.

Mauricio Pochettino must be wondering what he’s got himself into. It’s tough to see how Spurs are going to dig themselves out of this hole. They would have started the season hoping for a top four finish, but it doesn’t look like this group of players is capable of achieving that.

With all this in mind, Tottenham’s new manager is likely to look for new reinforcements during the January transfer window. According to The Metro, Pochettino could even be looking to bring somebody in before the transfer window re-opens.

The man in question is Lassana Diarra, who’s been out of contract since leaving Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow in the summer. As a result, Spurs can snap him up without having to pay a transfer fee. All they’d have to do is cover his wages. The aforementioned source suggests that Daniel Levy and co. have offered Diarra an ‘interesting package’. Intriguing stuff.

Numerous sources have made a big deal out of the fact that Diarra has previously played for Arsenal. Still, this was back in 2007, when he made only 7 appearances for Tottenham’s North London rivals. He’s better associated with Real Madrid where he featured 87 times between 2009 and 2012.

During his time at the Bernabeu, he earned a reputation for being a defensive midfielder who has plenty of flair and confidence on the ball. Yes, he’s good at winning the ball back, but he also knows what to do with it when he’s in possession. This quality is sure to help Spurs as they seek to achieve balance within their own squad.

He’s not going to work miracles for Tottenham, but he should help to steady the ship. It’s not like he’d be an expensive gamble.

What’s your take? Is Lassana Diarra the right man for Spurs? What other options should Mauricio Pochettino consider?

All we’d have to is find his wages and then find a club silly enough to take one of our foreign players off us for a decent price to free up a non-homegrown space in the squad.

    Easier said than done.
