PepeManchester United’s win against Arsenal could well act as a turning point for the club. Granted, it’s not that difficult to beat The Gunners anymore, but it’ll certainly put a spring in the step of Louis Van Gaal’s boys. With players like Juan Mata and Robin Van Persie starting to find their form, perhaps there’s reason to be hopeful.

If only Van Gaal would fix his defense. The Red Devils are down to their bare bones in this area of the pitch. Arsenal exposed them again and again during their weekend encounter. If the likes of Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck were better finishers, the result would likely have been very different. Indeed, you get the feeling that a better side would have had a field day against this team.

As such, there’s just no way that Manchester United can compete for the title until they’ve fixed their back-line. This should be LVG’s top priority when the transfer window re-opens.

This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are considering moving in for Real Madrid’s superstar centre-back, Pepe, this January.

The Portuguese ace has something of a reputation (he can be overly feisty sometimes and when he sees red, he’s not afraid to let it out on the pitch), but there’s no doubting his quality. He’s the kind of player you want on your side, not the kind of player that you want to be squaring off with.

At 31-years-old, his options are beginning to look a little limited at The Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti is a big fan of youngster Raphael Varane, which has led to Pepe being sidelined on some occasions this season. I’m sure that the Portuguese defender won’t be entirely satisfied with this situation. Maybe it will even force him to consider leaving his current club?

Let’s hope so. There’s no word as to how much he might cost, but there’s no doubt that he’d be worth it. There are very few defenders with Pepe’s quality and passion out there.

What’s your take? Should The Red Devils really be chasing this Real Madrid trouble-maker?

We don’t need an old man for ridiculous money, would rather spend that sum on Varane who has fell out of the first team under Ancelotti!
