During the summer transfer window Arsene Wenger surprised just about everybody by signing Danny Welbeck from Manchester United. He spent so much time discussing why he didn’t need another striker that it was a little difficult to understand why he changed his mind at the last moment. That’s not to say that he was wrong to do so.
Could a similar surprise be in store during the January transfer window?
Arsenal can currently call on Alexis Sanchez (who admittedly has mostly been deployed down the flanks thus far), Danny Welbeck and Olivier Giroud. The Frenchman isn’t that fast, but he’s good in the air and he’s an excellent finisher when he receives the ball in the box. With Welbeck’s pace and Sanchez’s drive, The Gunners have a good attacking trio in place.
So what are we to make of The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are eyeing up a deal for Real Madrid star Karim Benzema. Is this transfer rumour nonsense, or are The Gunners really about to pull the rug out from underneath us once again?
The source suggests that Benzema would cost Arsenal £40m. They also claim that Liverpool are interested (now there’s a team with some real issues upfront).
The Frenchman has more than earned his price-tag during his time at The Bernabeu. He’s been there for six seasons now (and it’s not a place where you tend to hang-around if you don’t have enough quality) and he’s scored 122 goals in 252 games. This season alone he’s found the back of the net 11 times in 17 games.
With his pace, technical ability and physicality, it’s easy enough to see Karim Benzema fitting in in the Premier League.
That being said, Arsenal’s main priority has to be signing a new defender or two. The Gunners are well stocked upfront, but they’re lacking at the back. It would be foolish to neglect the back-four at this stage in the season.
Still, if Arsenal can sign a centre-back (or two), a defensive midfielder and add Karim Benzema to their squad, I certainly won’t complain.
