Why Arsenal are right to chase this £20m Serie A talent:

DestroIn the run-up to the January transfer window, there’s been a rather curious but persistent Arsenal related rumour. For some reason, sources like The Metro continue to link The Gunners to Roma striker Mattia Destro.

This is a little odd as Arsenal are actually fairly well stocked in this area of the pitch. With players like Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck fitting in nicely in their new surroundings and Olivier Giroud about to return back form injury, this doesn’t strike me as a major priority for The Gunners.

At the moment Arsene Wenger’s side is leaking goals left, right and centre. Before the international break, they let two leads slip against two different teams. The first (a 3-3 draw against Anderlecht) was a disgrace and the second (a 2-1 defeat by Swansea City) was majorly unfortunate.

And yet Arsenal are getting linked to yet another centre-forward. It’s a little difficult to know what to make of these claims. The Metro suggest that Arsenal have already opened up ‘talks’ with Roma over a potential £20m deal. Things really seem to be heating up now.

Perhaps we should give Arsene Wenger his due credit. The man knows a good player when he sees one and that looks to be the case with Mattia Destro. The 22-year-old has already proven himself to be a reliable goal-scorer with 22 goals in 49 games for Roma.

Of course, those aren’t too dissimilar figures to the kind that Mario Balotelli got whilst at AC Milan (30 in 54) and we know how much of a hit he’s been since he moved back to the Premier League. Luckily, Destro’s all round game has more balance than Balotelli’s.

He’s lightening quick (so he should fit in nicely in an Arsenal line-up that contains players like Danny Welbeck, Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez), he’s intelligent and he works hard. In truth, he looks like a good fit for English football.

Perhaps that’s why Arsene Wenger has been tempted. £20m is a lot of money, but if The Professor can spend it and have enough left over to sign a defensive midfielder and a centre-back, then I won’t complain.

What’s your take? Should The Gunners really be interested in this Roma forward?
