Edinson Cavani (Uruguay)It’s difficult to argue that Robin Van Persie has been anything other than a hit since his arrival at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, it looks like he’s starting to offer diminishing returns. As The Red Devils form has stuttered, Van Persie’s form has also been affected. He’s still got a good goal-scoring record, but there are some games that completely pass him by.

His injury record is also a bit of problem. The Red Devils just can’t rely on him, which makes it difficult for them to build a team for the future. Given that he’s in his 30s, there’s an argument to suggest that he’s not a major part of Manchester United’s future any way. It looks like Louis Van Gaal may have to make a decision about the Dutchman sometime soon.

Indeed, The Metro claim that The Red Devils have agreed to ‘flog’ (lovely terminology, that) Robin Van Persie ‘in the coming months’, as they don’t want to pay him the £10m that they would owe him if he were to stay at Old Trafford for another 18 months.

I’m sure that Arsenal fans would laugh at the idea of Robin Van Persie earning a loyalty bonus. The man made his mercenary outlook clear to the entire world when he left The Emirates.

The Metro claim that Manchester United will try to replace Robin Van Persie with either Paris Saint Germain’s Edison Cavani or Bayern Munich’s Thomas Muller. If that’s really the case, then Louis Van Gaal should go ahead and send RVP on his merry way. Either of those two players would improve The Red Devils immeasurably.

The source also claims that Cavani would cost the club as much as £50m. That’s a huge amount of cash, but Manchester United have been throwing money at their problems in the recent past. If they can get RVP off of their salary bill, hopefully Van Gaal will have the budget to bring in another big money star.

Fingers crossed.

What’s your take? Should The Red Devils sign Edinson Cavani? Should they sell Robin Van Persie?
