Should Manchester United really spend £44m on Radamel Falcao?

Radamel FalcaoWhen Manchester United first signed Radamel Falcao during the summer transfer window, some of the excitement surrounding the loan deal was tempered by concerns regarding the man’s injury record. There’s no doubting the Colombian hitman’s goal-scoring record but in the last couple of years he’s spent more time warming the bench (so to speak) than scoring goals.

Last season Falcao picked up a serious knee injury that kept him out of contention for a long period. He missed out on the World Cup and he also had a truncated pre-season. It wasn’t the best preparation for a move to a big club.

Now that he’s playing his football in England there are still some concerns regarding his fitness. He hasn’t been a first-choice starter by any means at Old Trafford. His recent calf injury (picked up during a training session) is also a bit of a worry. Could it be that Radamel Falcao returned from injury a little too early?

This begs another question: should Manchester United really be considering turning their loan deal for Radamel Falcao into a permanent one? The optimist in me feels like they should, but there’s another part of me that is concerned that signing him on a long-term deal would be a mistake.

Let’s not forget: Radamel Falcao is now 28-years-old. By the end of next season, he’ll be 30-years-old. He’s no spring-chicken. This, combined with his injury record means that there’s a good chance that Manchester United won’t get a good return on investment on any potential deal for the Colombian.

The Metro claims that a long-term deal for Radamel Falcao would cost The Red Devils £44m. They’re currently paying him £300k-a-week. He’s a hugely expensive footballer.

As a result, I’d rather see Manchester United channel their cash elsewhere. Should Louis Van Gaal be looking at younger options? At this stage in the club’s evolution, shouldn’t they be building towards the future?

I can’t help but feel that there are smarter ways to spend a chunk of cash that big.

What’s your take? Is Radamel Falcao really the right man for Manchester United moving forward?
